Abstract |
A pictorial biography commerating the occasion of the 100th anniversary of St. Peter's-by-the-Sea Anglican Church, located in Old Harry on Grosse-Île on the Magdalen Islands (Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine). Built in 1916, the Church was constructed using wood from a shipwreck. On December 12, 1915, the Norwegian freighter Kwango, containing mainly timber, shattered west of Brion Island (north of Grosse-Île). The locals collect the cargo scattered on the beaches and donated it to the Reverend Arthur W. Reeves, who used the wood to build the Church of Saint-Peter's-By-the-Sea. The entrance doors of the church, called "Gates to Infinity", are a memorial to Aaron Clarke, a resident of Old-Harry, who was swept out to sea when he tried to rescue some swimmers. The church was deconsecrated in 2014.
