Title
Theology for Soldiers: Elson Rexford and Khaki University
Abstract
The Eastern Townships-born Elson Irving Rexford (1850-1936) was educated at McGill University and became a teacher and later an Anglican priest. In 1891 he was designated Rector of the High School of Montreal, and in 1904 was appointed Principal of the Montreal Diocesan Theological College, which trained Anglican ministers. In partnership with three other Montreal theological colleges and in conjunction with McGill University, Rexford helped establish one of the first ecumenical theological education curriculums in the world. The author outlines Rexford's role in establishing the Theology Program within the Khaki University, a school that was set up for Canadian soldiers in Europe following the First World War who were in the process of demobilization and awaiting repatriation back to Canada.
