Osler, Now a Veterinarian!

Abstract |
An examination of Sir William Osler's (1849-1919) interest in veterinary medicine and his association with the Montreal Veterinary College, founded in 1866, during his career at McGill University (1872-1884). Osler graduated from McGill's Faculty of Medicine in 1872 and was appointed a professor in the Faculty in 1874. Although over a thousand articles and books have been written about Osler, little has been recorded about his interest in veterinary medicine, including how, in 1879, Osler was elected president of the Montreal Veterinary Medical Association, founded in 1875. Osler's interest in veterinary medicine led to his interest in comparative medicine. The Montreal Veterinary College became a Faculty of McGill University in 1889, called the Faculty of Comparative Medicine. It closed in 1903 for lack of funds.
