Abstract
According to the author, Montreal in 1946 "...has not now, and has not had for nearly a hundred years, an English-language newspaper made great by its editorial policies." The author wondered if any change would be effected by the appointment of George V. Ferguson (1897-1977) as editor of the Montreal Star. The Scottish-born Ferguson had worked as a journalist at the Winnipeg Free Press under the legendary editor, J.W. Dafoe, and was appointed editor of that paper in 1944 on Dafoe's death. He moved to Montreal in 1946 to work for the CBC but soon after took on the position as editor of the Star. He held that position until his retirement in 1968.
