Print media has been in decline for decades, but what does this mean for Quebec’s English-speaking community? The author’s brief shows that media decline has disproportionately affected the province's linguistic minority and paved the way for "news deserts” - areas with little to no local journalism. Specifically, her brief highlights that: in Quebec, 104 media outlets have either folded, merged or gone online-only since 2008, with government funding failing so far to halt the decline; 22% of these were English or bilingual media, whereas English speakers represent 16.9% of the province’s population; “news deserts” reduce voter engagement and lead to greater polarization; and more research is needed on the sustainability and efficacy of alternative news models.
