| Abstract |
Award-winning novelist Gwethalyn Graham (1913-1965) was a part of Montreal's intellectual community in the 1930s and 1940s. She was a close friend and associate of Hugh MacLennan, F. R. Scott, Thérèse Casgrain and Pierre Trudeau. She was a socio-political writer at a time when few Canadian novelists were creating works in this vein. Her best known novel is Earth and High Heaven (1944). The story is set in Montreal during the Second World War and portrays a romance between Erica Drake, a young woman from a wealthy Protestant Westmount family, and Marc Reiser, a Jewish lawyer and soldier from Northern Ontario, and their efforts to confront and overcome anti-Semitism in their quest to form a lasting relationship. Graham was a Governor-General literary award winner for both her 1938 novel Swiss Sonata and Earth and High Heaven.
