| Abstract |
Members of the city’s Anglophone elite led the Natural History Society of Montreal, the first science museum in the city, throughout the first half of the nineteenth century. The museum prospered with its increased involvement with the Geological Survey of Canada during the 1850s and 1860s, until the economic crisis of the 1870s and the departure of the Survey to Ottawa in 1881 restored it to its amateur status.
