| Abstract |
Founded in 1917, the Province of Quebec Society for the Protection of Birds (PQSPB) was one of the first organizations of its kind in North America. Its primary mandate is to facilitate and encourage the study and protection of birds and their environment. In 1917, ornithologist Lewis McIver Terrill, the PQSPB's first president, stressed the need to do something about the dwindling numbers of birds in Montreal. The Society was instrumental in having Montreal's Mount Royal Park and the two Mount Royal cemeteries designated as bird sanctuaries.
