Abstract |
The author describes the proselytism aimed at the Irish (Protestant and Catholic) immigrant victims of typhus practiced by the Catholic religious orders in Montreal in 1847, who were encouraged to do so by the Ultramontane Bishop of Montreal, Mgr. Ignace Bourget. According to the author, Bourget saw this epidemic as a great opportunity to bring the "separated brothers" (i.e. Protestants) back to the "true faith" (Catholicism). This proselytism by the Catholic nuns, who were accused of being more interested in saving souls than saving lives, brought them into conflict with the Protestant lay volunteers ministering to the sick Irish. A particularly fertile ground for the practice of proselytism, the author maintains, was the care of children, with Irish orphans often at the center of quarrels between the Catholics and Protestants.
