Arthur Lismer: A Critical Analysis of His Pedagogy in Relation to His Use of the Project Method in Child-Centered Art Education
|
Abstract |
The British-born Arthur Lismer (1885-1969) ran the Montreal Children's Art Centre, affiliated with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, from 1941 to 1967. The author points out that Lismer's art education theories were mainly influenced by the teaching philosophies of Franz Cizek (1865-1946) of Austria and John Dewey (1859-1952) of the United States. The author examines the way Lismer combined the permissive theories of Cizek with the socially oriented Project Method inspired by Dewey at the Children's Art Centre.
