Settling Cherry River : Internal Migration in the Eastern Townships in the Nineteenth Century
|
Abstract |
The authors point out that compared to the knowledge of the nineteenth century out-migration of Anglophones from the Eastern Townships, less is known about the internal migration patterns of Anglophones within the Townships during this period. Focusing on the village of Cherry River, on the line between the townships of Orford and Magog, the authors relate that a few squatters lived in the area around Cherry River in the late 1830s, but official settlement only took off in the late 1850s and 1860s. The authors relate the history of the Buzzell family whose five generations of ancestors had lived in Bolton, in Brome County, since 1797, but moved to Cherry River in the 1850s for better economic opportunities.
