| Abstract |
An Oscar-nominated short animated documentary by Joyce Borenstein about her father, the Lithuanian-born Montreal artist Sam Borenstein (1908-1969). Using various animation techniques in this documentary, she integrates archival material, filmed sequences, the painting themselves, and reminiscences of friends and family, to bring Sam Borenstein's work to life. Sam Borenstein came to Canada in 1921. Over a forty-year period, he painted numerous scenes of Montreal, Laurentian villages and Quebec landscapes. His paintings were bustling with human activity, using brilliant colours and exuberant brushwork. Despite his talent, it was not until near the end of his life that his work began to be known.
