Abstract |
Reared on Jewish biblical culture, intimately and passionately involved in the Jewish community of Montreal and the fate of Jews in the wake of the holocaust and the birth of the State of Israel, the author notes that Montreal poet and novelist A.M. Klein (1909-1972) is also an English-language writer conversant with literary moderism and particularly with the writing of James Joyce. The author believes that Klein's book The Second Scroll (1951) is at the pinnacle of his achievement. A commentary on and celebration of "the Book," the author argues that The Second Scroll is ensconced in English-Canadian literature as a beacon of modernism. She concludes that for Klein, Judaism is a reading of the world which is not at variance with the religions it spawned, Christianity and Islam.
