Abstract
Clark Bentom (1744-1820) organized an independent Protestant congregation in Quebec City in 1800. This evangelical congregation had broken away from St. Andrew's (Presbyterian) Church when it became dissatisfied with the style of theology preached by St. Andrew's minister Alexander Spark (1762-1819). In 1802 Bentom's authority to perform the rites of marriage, baptism and burial were challenged by Jacob Mountain (1749-1825), Anglican bishop of Quebec. The attorney-general supported Mountain and at his trial, in July 1803, Bentom was adjudged not a bona fide minister. This booklet outlines Bentom's position at trial.
