Abstract
A political document signed in 1849 by 325 predominately Anglophone Montreal merchants supporting Canada's annexation to the United States. The signatories opposed Britain's abolition of the Corn Laws in 1846, thus ending preferential colonial trade, and the Governor General's consent to the Rebellion Losses Bill in 1849, which compensated with taxpayers' money those who lost property during the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838, including those who supported the Patriote rebels. The Annexation Movement died out by 1854 with the signing of the Reciprocity Treaty with the United States.
