Contested Land: Squatters and Agents in the Eastern Townships of Lower Canada
|
Abstract |
Squatting on Crown land in the Eastern Townships in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries implied moral rights that nonresidents whose claims were sanctioned by official land titles could not easily ignore. The author argues that landholding became a protracted process of negotiation between speculator and squatter in which locally based agents played a crucial mediating role.
