Abstract
Sidney Dawes (1888-1968) was a Montreal industrialist and graduate of McGill University. Dawes wanted McGill to have an art gallery, and the university received sixty-four Canadian paintings from the industrialist to form the nucleus of an art collection. The collection contained more than eleven hundred works when this article was written. The author includes a complete catalogue of the original Dawes donation.
