French-English Subcultural Segmentation: An Analysis of Consociational Politics in Quebec
|
Abstract |
An examination of English-French relations in Quebec society and politics between 1936 and 1977. The author argues that by virtue of the economic strength and cultural dominance of English in Canada and North America, English Quebecers were for the most part able to obtain an effective "politics of accommodation" with the province's French-speaking majority. He points out that this consociational accommodation peaked in the mid-1930s, and gradually went into decline by the 1970s with the rise of Québécois nationalism.
