Abstract |
In late June 1950, Yaacov Zipper (1900-1982), noted Montreal Yiddish writer, principal of the city's Jewish Peretz Schools for over forty years and a leading figure in the social and cultural life of Jewish Montreal, resumed the practice of keeping a journal. From that date, with the exception of a three-year lapse in the mid-1950s, Zipper continued to write down his private thoughts, stopping six months before his death. The authors translated Zippers thirty-six journals from Yiddish to English, and their essay offers selected entries from the journals, presented according to three themes: educational issues, Zippers concerns as a writer, and entries of a personal nature, including eulogies and commemorations.
