Shadrach Minkins: From Fugitive Slave to Citizen
Abstract
In February 1851, Shadrach Minkins, a fugitive slave from Virginia, was brought to trial in Boston preparatory to being returned to his slave owner. Through the combined efforts of Boston’s African-American community and abolitionists, he escaped and was sent north. Mr. Minkins eventually found a home in Montreal where he married, raised a family and supported himself as both a shopkeeper and a barber until his death in the winter of 1875.
