Abstract |
A review of McGill's role as a leading research-intensive university; the role McGill played in recognizing higher education as a Canada-wide concern; and the role the university played in encouraging federal government funding of higher education. The author concentrates on McGill's three longest-serving principals: Sir William Dawson (Principal from 1855 to 1893), Sir William Peterson (Principal from 1895 to 1919), and F. Cyril James (Principal from 1939 to 1962).
