Canada's Black Watch : The First Hundred Years, 1862-1962
Abstract
The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada originated in Montreal on January 31, 1862, as the 5th Battalion Volunteer Militia Rifles of Canada. It is the oldest highland regiment in the country. The rise of American military strength during the Civil War was a concern, leading the government to authorize the formation of militia regiments. Each of six Montreal Scottish chieftains responded by raising an infantry company for the 5th Battalion. Eventually, eight companies were raised for border service. Since then, the Black Watch has seen action in the Boer War, the two World Wars, the Korean War, and NATO and UN peacekeeping missions worldwide.
