Abstract
The Calgary-born painter, draftsman, commercial artist, journalist (The Montreal Standard), printmaker and educator Philip Surrey (1910-1990) moved to Montreal in 1937. Part of Montreal's cultural elite during the late 1930s and 1940s, Surrey's paintings were known for their figurative scenes of the city. He was a founding member of the Eastern Group of Painters and the Contemporary Arts Society. From 1965 to 1975 Surrey taught drawing at Concordia University.
