Title
The Montreal Exhibition Building and Museum, 1860: A Monument to Pre-Confederation Canadian Economic Nationalism
Abstract
The author argues that the provincial exhibition building and museum, also known as the "Crystal Palace", built in Montreal in 1860, was a product of the Canadian political, economic and social conditions which prevailed during the period. The emergence of a "national policy" in the 1850s and the 1860s led directly to the creation of the Board of Arts and Manufactures for Lower Canada in 1857 which undertook construction of the Crystal Palace as part of its legislated mandate to maintain a museum and model room in Montreal and to participate in annual provincial exhibitions. The author traces the local roots of the Board of Arts and Manufactures to the activities, programs and leadership of the Montreal Mechanics' Institute. The author examines the planning and construction of the Crystal Palace, designed by Montreal architect John William Hopkins (1825-1905).
