Title
Engendering Modern Canadian Poetry: Preview, First Statement and the Disclosure of Patrick Anderson’s Homosexuality
Abstract
In the spring of 1943, John Sutherland, editor of the Montreal little magazine First Statement, published a critique of Patrick Anderson’s poetry. Anderson was editor of the rival Montreal magazine, Preview. In the critique, Sutherland accused Anderson of being a homosexual. The author examines the cultural discourses that surrounded Sutherland’s outing of Anderson’s sexuality, especially the false dichotomy between the two rival magazines based on gender, sexuality, class and nationalism.
