Abstract
Edwin Holgate (1892-1977) was a Montreal painter and engraver who played a major role in Montreal's art community from the 1920s to the 1940s. Holgate studied at the Art Association of Montreal under William Brymner and later Maurice Cullen. His first exhibition was held at the Arts Club of Montreal in 1922. He was associated with the Beaver Hall Group and was considered the eighth member of the Group of Seven. He taught at both the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal.
