Title
'Local/Global' : Montréal dans la poésie de Robyn Sarah, Mary de Michele et Erin Mouré
Abstract
The author argues that English Quebec writing has often seemed isolated in relation to both French-speaking Quebec and English Canada. In this article, she offers a reading of Anglo-Montrealer works that attempt to move away from this position of withdrawal, entering a global scene that is deeply intertwined with the local scene. She maintains that the poetry of Robyn Sarah, Mary di Michele and Erin Mouré indicates that the global world is filtered by local phenomena such as the cultural and religious contiguities of specific neighbourhoods, the histories of migration and movement that can be traced in certain place-names, and the movement between French, English and other languages characteristic of Montreal. However, because of major differences in the poetics of each of these writers, English Quebec writing is not viewed as a coherent category.
