Title
The Evolution of the Birth Control Book Handbook: From Student Peer-Education Manual to Feminist Self-Empowerment Text, 1968-1975
Abstract
The Birth Control Handbook, first published in 1968 and the product of a committee of McGill University students, is an example of a peer-education tool originally meant to educate youths about sexual health issues. The author examines the peer-education roots of the Handbook and charts the evolution of the text from a revolutionary student manual to a key feminist self-empowerment tract between 1968 and 1975. The article also includes the recollections of some of the key individuals involved in the development, production and distribution of the Handbook.
