Title
The Ideal Education to Construct an Ideal World: The Dunham Ladies’ College and the Anglican Elite of the Montreal Diocese, 1860-1913
Abstract
The author argues that the Dunham Ladies College, located in the Eastern Townships village of Dunham, was created for the elite daughters of the Montreal Anglican Diocese as a means to retain the social and spiritual influence of Anglicanism in reaction to the mid-nineteenth century disestablishment of that church, the rise of the politically powerful Catholic Church in the province, and the growing popularity of evangelical Protestantism.
