Abstract |
The author examines the patient registers of two lying-in hospitals, the little-known Montreal Maternity between 1851 and 1905 and the celebrated Geburtskliniken of the Allgemeines Krankenhaus in Vienna between 1872 and 1930. Both hospitals served poor women who needed charitable aid in childbirth. Most of the patients in the Montreal Maternity hospital were poor unmarried British immigrant women.
