Quête d’identité juive par les archives et la généalogie

Abstract |
The discovery of the death of the author's great-grandparents, gassed in 1943 at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, triggered her search for genealogical information on her family, which led to questions about how archives are used and managed. She found that Jewish genealogy is often linked to a psychological and sometimes physiological need, that of filling a "gaping hole" caused by several migrations, pogroms and a "recent" genocide. In this context, the author examined what importance archives played (in a traumatic context) in Jewish genealogy and in their emotional and identity impacts. To answer these research questions, the author visited the genealogical routes in two organizations: Le Cercle de Généalogie Juive in Paris and the Jewish Genealogical Society of Montreal. She found that the Parisian organization is more attached to the original archives (especially in the context of the Shoah) and it does not hesitate to share them; the Montreal organization is more fond of digital archives (especially in the context of immigration) and it favours information rather than support.
