Abstract |
A biography of Edward Ellice the elder (1783-1863), nicknamed "Bear Ellice" for his "oily" financial acumen. Ellice was a British merchant and prominent in the social, economic and political life of early nineteenth-century Lower Canada. A member of Montreal's North West Company, Ellice was instrumental in negotiating the company's union with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821. He was also a supporter of the conservative mercantile oligarchy of Lower Canada despite the fact that he was connected with the passage of the "liberal" Reform Bill in the British Parliament. He was also an absentee land owner of the Seigneury of Beauharnois, and tried unsuccessfully to develop the area according to "business methods" and not the time-honoured seigneurial customs. Mention is made of his son, also named Edward.
