Abstract |
The Frontier Sunday School Association (after 1920 the Frontier Branch of the Religious Education Council of the Province of Quebec) was founded in 1877 for two purposes: to support the Sunday schools, and to train Sunday school teachers and officers within the Chateauguay Valley from Dundee to Lacolle and from Chateauguay to Trout River. At its height, sixty-one Sunday schools within the Chateauguay Valley were members of the Association. The Association was in existence until at least 1945, although the declining English-speaking population and improved transportation cut the number of Sunday schools belonging to the Association to only thirteen by 1938. The author describes the linkages between the Temperance Movement and the Association, and the role of women in both organizations.
