Abstract
An examination of why New York City-born William Smith (1728-1793) became a Loyalist based on those ideas and patterns that set Smith (and others) apart from the American revolutionaries. Smith moved to Lower Canada in 1786 and was appointed that year as Chief Justice of the colony.
