Abstract |
A study of literacy in Quebec City based on signatures on marriage records. Included in the analysis of 4,434 marriage contracts from three parishes are 821 from the Protestant English Cathedral. Of these Anglicans, 53.9 percent are determined by the author to be literate compared to 31.9 percent of Francophone Catholics. During the period 1795-1840, Anglophones comprised 29.3 percent of the population of Quebec City.
