Abstract |
Montreal playwright David Fennario's 1984 play titled "Joe Beef" told the story of Irish-born Montreal tavern keeper Charles McKiernan (1835-1889). He was known as "Joe Beef" from his time as a Quartermaster with the British Army during the Crimean War. He came to Montreal with his artillery regiment and in 1868, following his discharge, opened Joe Beef's Tavern at 201–207 rue de la Commun, in what is now Old Montreal. Every day, the poor and outcasts of Montreal were given a free lunch by McKiernan if they could not afford to pay. Fennario wrote an introduction to this article.
