Du port de Québec aux ports américains : les migrations saisonnières des débardeurs irlandais au XIXe siècle

Abstract |
In the nineteenth century, unskilled Irish Catholic longshoremen could only work at the Port of Quebec from May to November, when the harbour was free of ice and ships could ascend the St. Lawrence River. The author points out that some port workers were hired at the local brewery or as carters during the winter months. Others decided to go to the ports of the southern United States to work as longshoreman. These migrations took them to Louisiana (New Orleans), Georgia (Savannah), Alabama (Mobile) and Florida (Pensacola). According to the January 1861 Canadian census, the author found that there were 450 Irish longshoremen temporarily absent from Quebec City.
