Title
Daniel Wilkie : un humaniste au service de l'éducation
Abstract
The Scottish-born Wilkie (c. 1777-1851) arrived in Quebec City in 1803. He opened what would today be considered a secondary school where, among other progressive measures, he offered evening courses for young workers. The author also mentions Wilkie's other progressive ideas on matters of agriculture, immigration, religious instruction, and the fine arts. He was a founding member (and later President) of Quebec City's Literary and Historical Society and of the city's St. Andrew's Society. In 1827, Wilkie established the Star and Commercial Advertiser/L'Étoile et journal du commerce. He sold the newspaper in 1830.
