Economic and Social History of Quebec, 1760-1850: Structures and Conjonctures [sic]

Abstract |
Considered one of the most important and controversial interpretations of Quebec's post-Conquest era, the author's study challenged the Quebec nationalist viewpoint that the Conquest alone brought about the economic decline of French Canada. He argues that Québécois nationalism did not grow solely as a result of the Conquest but was as much a product of the early nineteenth century economic inferiority of middle-class Francophones due to their unwillingness to abandon ancien régime institutions and mentalities. The author highlights the relationship between Francophone and Anglophone Lower Canadians from the Capitulation of New France to the beginning of the industrial revolution in Canada.
