Abstract |
In 1941, war separates a dozen friends sharing a common Montreal background – Anglophone, white, Protestant and middle class. As they swear to keep in touch, one of them volunteers to start a weekly newspaper entitled "The Marlowe Lowdown." Each issue is composed of excerpts from letters written by the friends, centralized by the editor. He prints and sends each issue to the group. Published until January 1946, The Marlowe Lowdown maintained a social network whose links was threatened by war. The author points out that not only does this publication gather personal narratives, it also offers a glimpse into an “imagined community” – the 1940’s Canadian nation.
