Theorizing the Peregrinations of Anglo/Québécois Literature in Translation
Abstract
Theorizing the peregrinations of "Anglo-Québécois" literature in translation, the author argues that English-Quebec literature is an integral part of Québécois literature, and the proof is in its translated works. Seeking to understand the actual mechanics of translating culture from English into French by using stereoscopic reading (a comparative analytical technique that requires the original text and the translation be read side by side), the author examines two contemporary English Quebec novels — Cockroach (2008) by Rawi Hage and Lullabies for Little Criminals (2006) by Heather O’Neill — and their translations. Hage’s Cockroach was translated in Quebec and O'Neill's Lullabies for Little Criminals was translated in Paris.
