Abstract
An examination of the foundation and evolution of the Catholic Community Services, a communal welfare agency that has been part of the organized English Catholic community in Montreal since the Depression of the 1930s. The author looks at changes to the agency, including the role of the church in charity work; the growing involvement of the provincial government in social services; the emergence of professional social workers; the impact of Quebec nationalism on private charitable organizations; and the changes in the socio-economic conditions of English Catholics in the city.
