Abstract
An examination of newspapers, magazines, and libraries in 18th and 19th century Quebec. The author points out that between 1764 and 1859, English Quebecers made up twenty-two percent of Quebec's population but founded fifty-eight percent of the province's newspapers. Between 1810 and 1819, the number of English-language newspapers exceeded the number of French-language papers in Montreal (6 compared with 3) and Quebec City (4 compared with 1), and overall 10 compared with 5.
