Abstract
The Scottish-born Alexander Henderson (1831-1913) immigrated to Montreal in 1855, where from 1859 to 1863 he worked as a commission merchant. Henderson learned photography in Montreal about 1857 and quickly took it up as a serious amateur. In 1866 he gave up his business and opened a photographic studio, advertising himself as a portrait and landscape photographer. After 1870 he dropped portraiture to specialize in landscape photography, including Montreal city life, buildings and street scenes. From 1875 he began photographing the country's developing railway systems, and in 1892 Henderson accepted a full-time position with the Canadian Pacific Railway as manager of its newly-created photographic department.
