Ethnic Assimilation in Quebec: A Statistical Analysis
|
Abstract |
An analysis of linguistic transfers in Quebec using 1971 census data, specifically the linguistic transfer from English-speakers to French-speakers, and the asserted "peril" of assimilation of Francophones that sociologist Charles Castonguay and others were espousing during this period. The author concluded that the census data showed that, except for Montreal and Hull, Francophones continued to assimilate maternal language Anglophones in Quebec. And, he further concluded, even in Montreal Anglophones seemed to be more ready to transfer linguistically to French than did French ethnics to English.
