Abstract
A study of the Montreal art scene in the 1920s, a period when a nationalist cultural agenda was emerging among English Canada’s intelligentsia class. The Beaver Hall Group, Montreal's first association of modern artists, was short-lived (1920-1923), and was only re-discovered in the 1950s when it was presented as being primarily composed of Anglophone women artists. However, the author points out that while there was a large contingency of female members, latter-day historians have largely ignored the male members, who comprised the majority of the Beaver Hall Group.
