Abstract |
According to the author, the Scottish-born James McGill "combined the talents of pioneering capitalism, civic enterprise and prudent philanthropy." After immigrating to Montreal (the exact year is not known, but he was in the town in 1766, and lived there permanently from 1775), McGill became a merchant, politician, land owner, slave owner, and militia officer, as well as a philanthropist. He is best known for the land and money that he bequeathed to what is today Montreal's McGill University.
