Abstract |
The author examines the works of three Montreal choral music composers of the early 1900s - Guillaume Couture, Alexis Contant and Charles A. E. Harriss. The British-born Harriss (1863-1927) held the posts of organist and choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral in Montreal from 1883 to 1886, and the same posts at St. James the Apostle Church from 1886 to 1894. From 1904 to 1907 Harriss served as the first Principal of the McGill University Conservatorium of Music.
