Abstract |
The Scottish-born Duncan McNab McEachran (1841-1924) immigrated to Canada in 1862 after graduating from the Edinburgh Veterinary College, and moved to Montreal in 1865. In 1866 he founded the Montreal Veterinary College, the first school of veterinary medicine in Quebec. In 1899, the college became a faculty of comparative medicine and veterinary science at McGill University. McEachran served as Dean of the faculty until 1903. From 1885, he also served (part-time) as the first chief veterinary inspector for the government of Canada, where he pioneered a world-renowned regulatory veterinary medicine system, initiated Canada's livestock importation and quarantine structure, and excluded important foreign animal diseases. In 1909, McEachran moved to Ormstown, southwest of the Montreal. He operated a dairy farm and raised Clydesdale horses on a 200 acres farm on the Chateauguay River.
