|
Abstract |
The author points out that McGill University began not as a liberal arts college but as a medical school. However, predating the establishment of the medical faculty at McGill, four doctors (Caldwell, Robertson, Stevenson and Holmes) formed the Montreal Medical Institution in 1823, which also contained a library. Dr. Andrew F. Holmes was appointed librarian. In 1829, the Montreal Medical Institution was "engrafted upon McGill College" as the first teaching body of the new university. The medical library of the Montreal Medical Institution became the Medical Library of McGill University. Dr. Hoilmes became the university's first Librarian.
